Dear Parents,
As always, teachers were delighted to welcome pupils back to school. Term Two promises to be as exciting and busy as Term One. Please take note of the following announcements:

EIS West – A School with a Good Reputation:

As you know, EIS West is like no other school in Moscow. Our school has an outstanding reputation, attributed to our sense of family and community, and the unique learning opportunities we provide for all of our pupils far beyond the ordinary. We are also proud of the vibrant ethos that prevails throughout our dynamic and diverse school community.
Please be reminded that pupils from EIS West also have the opportunity to continue their schooling in Year 7 at EIS South-West. Last year, secondary students achieved the following excellent IGCSE and A/AS Level results. Please see the information below or at our new web-site: www.englishedmoscow.com/eis-moscow-south-west/exam-results-alumni

Trans-Siberian Winter Express Concert:

As previously indicated, owing to so many pupils being absent due to illness at the end of Term One, the videographer will return to school on Tuesday, 18th January to give Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 4 and Year 5 the opportunity to stage their performances. Once the video has been edited, copies of the Winter Concert will be sent to parents.

Winter Concert Video:

I hope everyone enjoyed watching the Winter Concert video, "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", arranged by our Music teacher, Ms Anna Denisova. The founder and chairman of Orbital Education was so impressed, when he saw the video, that he sent EIS West the following congratulatory message: “Thank you for the great blast of seasonal song and cheer.”
Just in case you haven’t seen it, please find the link below: https://youtu.be/wLjwVbuwj2Y

Our Very Own Newspaper:

Ms Jeanelle, our Year One teacher, and her Busy Bee Newspaper Club is thrilled to announce the launch of EIS West’s brand-new school newspaper, “Busy Bee”. Their first issue clearly illustrates that the paper is “by the pupils, for the pupils, about the pupils”. The young journalists reported about the latest buzz, including the Student Council, the Eco Club, the PE lessons, the school uniform and Halloween celebrations. You can also vote for the best newspaper front page, designed by several club members. The Busy Bee Newspaper Club members are ready to circulate this special issue to pupils and teachers.

Afternoon/Lunchtime Club Activities:

Please be reminded that club activities will commence next week on Monday, 17th January. A programme, featuring a wide range of activities, has been compiled by Ms Marna, our Year Five teacher. All pupils are encouraged to participate in club activities. Pupil who commute by bus are encouraged to join lunchtime activities, as they are unable to stay after school.
As always, I invite you to contact us at school, if you have any questions or concerns.
Regards,
Geoff Ward – Head of School

EYFS - Winter Wonderland

This week, we welcomed all of our students back to school, including a new student, Eric who comes from China.
It was great to be able to swap our stories about our holidays, and we also spent time getting back into our early years routines and meeting up with our friends. Throughout the week we had a lot of fun engaging in the review of numeracy and phonic activities and were able to consolidate our previous learning.
The fluffy white snow offered wonderful opportunities to build snowmen, dig with spades and play games.
We are all excited about our new topic ‘Once upon a time …’ where we will explore the magical world of stories. More to follow.....!

YEAR 1

It took only one short lesson in drawing a 100 square for the Year 1s to grasp how to count in 10s from any given number. As a result, we challenged them by teaching them about money. At a stage, each pupil had a toy shop. They named their prices, negotiated with the teachers, used calculators to calculate the change they needed to give and even how to get change for large bank notes. The fact that we used fake money and borrowed toys didn’t matter – we still had fun playing shop. We’ll hone in on these skills when the Year 1s sell their goods to the rest of the school next Friday. We anticipate that every Year 1 will be over the moon when he/she gets to sell real items for real money.
The kids didn’t only learn from us; we also learned from the kids. Nikolay taught us that a boy can grow almost a head taller AND come back even smarter than before – and all of that in three weeks! He read dozens of books and completed several pages of homework over the holidays. It really paid off, because he is as smart as a whip now.
We also learned from Uliana. While discussing Kings, Queens and Castles, the pupils clearly understood that a monarch writes the rules of a country. Some interesting answers arose when the Year 1s hypothesized about the rules they would make if they were monarchs. We were especially impressed with Uliana, who indicated that all children should have toys, all people should have food and all people should have money to buy food.
Moreover, we laughed a whole lot. During our daily calendar time, we asked what shoes do we wear outside. Andrey answered: “Japanese shoes”. During our circle time, we crumpled up some flashcards to play “Hot Potato”. Tongue-in-cheek, Wei asked: “Are you having a barbecue?”
When we discussed our communities, we asked what sports the pupils do with their families. Simon said: “Apples.” After some prompting, he explained: “Me (sic) eat apple, me (sic) dad eat apple. Me (sic) eat fast, he eat fast. Me (sic) eat the fastest and we nam-nam-nam-nam.” After laughing for a few minutes, we concluded that an apple eating contest can indeed be classified as a sport.

YEAR 2

Welcome back to school! It was wonderful to see the children return to school refreshed and ready to learn! Everyone was glad to see their friends again and welcome a new student. Year 2 shared many stories of their lovely family holidays. We began a new History unit by learning about the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. Soon, the children will begin completing their own project about a person of their choice. In Science, we are examining different materials and seeing how they can change. Year 2 have started the first week of Term 2 with great enthusiasm!
