Retiring Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois said Tuesday he would “finalize this week” whether he will run for Chicago mayor, the Chicago Tribune reported

Today, Gutierrez announced that he won’t run and encouraged Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia to run instead.

Rahm Emmanuel, the current mayor and former congressman and White House chief of staff, announced earlier he won’t run for re-election.

Climbing stairs in solidarity

New Mexico Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham joined firefighters from the Albuquerque area for their annual stair climb to mark 9/11, the Daily Post reported.

The firefighters climbed 120 flights carrying their gear, which weighs more than 50 pounds, to symbolize New York firefighters’ efforts at the World Trade Center.

Debate challenge

Iowa Democrat J.D. Scholten has yet to get Rep. Steve King to debate him, so he’s taking another approach.

“As an alternative, we could also do a free throw contest,” Scholten says in a new video. “The ball's in your court.”
