On Wednesday 9 December we hosted the latest instalment in our ‘In conversation with...’ series, this time featuring the supremely talented Alejandro González Iñárritu. Moderator Charles Sturridge spoke to Alejandro about his incredible body of work, his commitment to rehearsal time, and how he gets such great performances from ensemble casts.
Alejandro González Iñárritu is the Mexican director behind Amores perros, 21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Revenant. In 2015 he was awarded an Oscar for Best Directing, with Birdman also winning in the Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay categories.
Charles Sturridge has directed a huge number of productions for both TV and cinema. His work includes Brideshead Revisited, Longitude, Shackleton, FairyTale: A True Story, Where Angels Fear to Tread, The Road to Coronation Street and The Scapegoat. He is also the former Chair of Directors UK.
In his introduction, Charles said that when Directors UK was established one of its aims was to promote the work of the director, as something beyond operating a camera. It's hard to think of a director who embodies that more than Alejandro González Iñárritu.
It's true! Alejandro was a radio host at the Mexican radio station WFM, specialising in rock and eclectic music, later becoming director of the station before moving onto directing.
