How do actors like to be directed on set? What works for them and, crucially, what doesn’t? In this session actor-director Burt Caesar took a panel of screen actors through their experiences of both good and bad direction and asked them how a director can go about getting the best performance from their cast.

Hugh Quarshie is a veteran actor of stage and screen. His film credits include The Dogs of War, Highlander, Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace and To Walk with Lions. His TV credits include the BBC Shakespeare series, Medics, White Heat and The Murder of Stephen Lawrence. He is best known for his long-running role as Ric Griffin in Holby City, for which he has also directed.
Felicity Dean is a British actor, critically acclaimed for her work in film, television and theatre. Her career has seen her work with directors such as Joseph Losey, Hugh Hudson, Roger Michell, David Atwood and Mike Leigh. Her feature films include The Prince and the Pauper, Revolution and The Whistleblower. Her TV work includes Persuasion, Stuart: A Life Backwards and Talk to Me. She has just finished playing Elizabeth I for a docudrama series with Chris Holt.
Ellora Torchia has worked as an actor in multiple TV series and theatre productions since graduating from RADA in 2014. Her most recent screen credits include the third series of Broadchurch and Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands. Her previous television work has included Indian Summers, DCI Banks, The Suspicions of Mr Whicher and Spooks. Ellora has also produced and directed the documentary I Am...
Burt Caesar is a director and actor in both film and theatre. His best known work includes Skyfall, Doctors and Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. His TV directing work includes Remembrance Day by Derek Walcott and Welcome Home Jacko by Mustapha Matura, as well as numerous episodes of Doctors. Burt is also a directing instructor and supervisor at film schools in London and the US.
